I do actually have some friends that will be going--but only for a few days. Does this home stay work like that or is it more long-term?

I am pleased that you had a good time. I was there for nearly 2 months as well as in Lma and other places. You might like to check my blog to compare impressions. Enjoy your trip. If anyone else you know is going there I have a contact for an excellent family home stay.

Chinh!! How cool that you got to participate in the Ojo Que Llora ceremony! I'm so jealous. Calin and I actually just visited the monument for the first time today (Saturday) --and it was amazing. Have you read about the Masacre de Cantuta (university in Lima) that occurred on July 18, 1992? I'm not sure if you have but it was a big big big deal and one of the few cases taken to court. Fujimori was convicted for his role in this masacre carried out by the Colina group. 9 students and a teacher were murdered that night. You were blessed and honored enough to meet a family member of one of those nine students--Heráclides Pablo Meza. If you google "mantaza cantuta" or something like it you will find lots of information on the incident. There is also a monument at La Cantuta that I believe you could go visit before you left.

I was fortunate to hear Gisela Ortiz (sister of Enrique Ortiz, also one of the 9 students murdered that night) speak in one of my classes.

I'm so glad you got this experience.
